Manchester United continued their upward momentum under Michael Carrick with a hard-earned 1-0 win away at Everton, thanks to another decisive contribution from substitute Benjamin Sesko.
In a contest low on fluency and chances at Hill Dickinson Stadium, patience was required before the breakthrough finally arrived in the 71st minute.
Sesko, introduced from the bench, sparked the move himself deep in United territory before sprinting clear of the Everton back line.
After slick link-up play involving Matheus Cunha and a perfectly weighted pass from Bryan Mbeumo, the Slovenian calmly swept home a first-time finish for his eighth goal of the season.
The first half had offered little to excite either set of supporters, with defences largely on top. Everton came closest through Michael Keane’s fierce long-range strike late on, but United goalkeeper Senne Lammens produced a superb save to preserve the lead.
Earlier, James Tarkowski had also cleared off the line to deny Amad as United threatened sporadically.
Carrick’s side have now taken 16 points from six matches since his appointment, winning five and firmly entrenching themselves in the race for Champions League qualification.
Everton, by contrast, remain without a home win in seven games and sit ninth, their frustration growing despite a committed display.
With confidence building and impact players emerging from the bench, United’s season is gathering momentum at a crucial stage.
