Novak Djokovic walked away from Wimbledon with mixed emotions after his semi-final defeat to Jannik Sinner, acknowledging that while reaching the last four remains a significant achievement, it does not satisfy the standards he has set throughout his legendary career.
The 39-year-old Serbian was chasing a record-equaling eighth Wimbledon title and an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam crown. However, world No. 1 Sinner proved too strong, defeating Djokovic in straight sets for the second consecutive Wimbledon semi-final.
Reflecting on the campaign, Djokovic admitted that most players would celebrate a Grand Slam semi-final, but his expectations remain far higher.
“It’s good, but not good enough,” he said, describing the constant battle between appreciating his longevity and striving for more major titles.
Despite the disappointment, Djokovic refused to be overly critical of his performance. He accepted that Sinner was simply the better player on the day, praising the Italian’s improved serve, consistency from the baseline, and overall control of the match. The defeat also continued Sinner’s recent dominance in their rivalry, with the Italian winning six of their last seven meetings.
Djokovic found positives in his tournament, particularly his epic five-set quarter-final victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime, which became the longest Wimbledon quarter-final in history. That performance, he believes, proved he can still compete with the world’s best when fully fit.
Although Wimbledon once again slipped from his grasp, Djokovic remains determined to continue competing at the highest level.
His wait for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title now shifts to the US Open, where he will once again attempt to add another historic chapter to one of tennis’ greatest careers.
