Bayern Munich winger Luis Díaz has been handed a three-game suspension by UEFA following his red card against Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.
The Colombian had been the hero of the night after scoring both goals in Bayern’s 2–1 win in Paris, but his evening took a dramatic turn when he was sent off for a heavy challenge on Achraf Hakimi just before halftime.
The tackle left Hakimi with a severe sprain in his left ankle, and the PSG defender has not featured for the Ligue 1 side since.
The Moroccan full-back appeared at the CAF Awards midweek using a scooter, highlighting the seriousness of the injury as he collected the African Footballer of the Year award.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany initially believed Díaz would serve only a single-match suspension, expecting him to miss just the upcoming clash against Arsenal.
However, UEFA confirmed on Friday that the winger will also miss Bayern’s home fixtures against Sporting on December 9 and Union Saint-Gilloise on January 21.
Kompany, speaking earlier in the day, admitted he would be “disappointed” if the ban extended beyond one game, but UEFA’s decision means Bayern will now be without one of their key attacking players for a crucial stretch of their Champions League campaign.
Despite the setback, Bayern remain one of the competition’s standout performers, sitting top of their group with a perfect 12 points from four matches, matched only by Arsenal and Inter Milan as the tournament’s unbeaten trio.
