The latest WTA rankings have delivered one of the most inspiring stories of the season, with Sorana Cirstea finally breaking into the Top 20 for the first time in her career at the age of 36.
After a superb semi final run at the Italian Open, highlighted by a stunning victory over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, Cirstea climbed to No. 18 and became the oldest player in WTA history to make a Top 20 debut. It marked a remarkable turnaround for the Romanian, who had dropped outside the Top 150 last year following injury struggles and surgery.
Rome also belonged to Elina Svitolina, who captured her third Italian Open title with victories over Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff in consecutive rounds. The Ukrainian star has now returned to No. 7 in the world, continuing her impressive resurgence since becoming a mother.
Elsewhere, Karolina Muchova moved back into the Top 10 after another consistent stretch, while Anastasia Potapova completed a dramatic rise from No. 97 to No. 28 in just over a month.
Another milestone came from Zeynep Sonmez, who became the highest-ranked Turkish woman in WTA history after climbing to No. 59.
With Roland Garros approaching, the rankings race suddenly feels wide open and full of fresh stories.
