The men’s draw at Roland Garros took a dramatic turn on Friday as rising stars and seasoned contenders produced a series of memorable performances to reach the second week in Paris.

The headline belonged to 19-year-old Brazilian sensation João Fonseca, who delivered the biggest win of his young career by defeating Novak Djokovic in a stunning five-set battle.

After trailing by two sets, Fonseca fought back to claim a 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 victory in nearly five hours. The teenager became the first player ever to beat Djokovic at a Grand Slam while still in his teens, ending the Serbian’s campaign in the third round for the first time in 17 years.

Earlier in the day, Casper Ruud showcased his trademark resilience to survive another marathon encounter. The Norwegian, a two-time Roland Garros finalist, saved two match points before overcoming Tommy Paul 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(4), 7-5.

Ruud looked headed for defeat but raised his level when it mattered most, extending his unbeaten Grand Slam record against the American to four matches.

Another comeback came from Czech youngster Jakub Mensik. Just two days after collapsing from exhaustion during his previous match, the 20-year-old recovered from a first-set bagel to shock eighth seed Alex de Minaur 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.

His aggressive net play and fearless shot-making earned him a maiden Roland Garros fourth-round appearance.

Meanwhile, Andrey Rublev became the first man into the last 16, producing his cleanest performance of the tournament.

The Russian defeated Nuno Borges 7-5, 7-6(2), 7-6(2), setting up a clash with Mensik as the battle for a first-time Grand Slam champion gathers momentum.
