The Premier League’s first weekend of the new year delivered chaos, late goals and dropped points at both ends of the table.
The headline act came at the Etihad, where Chelsea snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw against Manchester City. Tijjani Reijnders’ first-half strike looked set to keep City on Arsenal’s heels, but Enzo Fernández struck in the 94th minute to deny Pep Guardiola’s side a ninth straight home league win and further dent their title charge.
At Elland Road, Leeds United held Manchester United to a fiercely contested 1-1 draw. Brenden Aaronson punished a defensive lapse to put the hosts ahead before Matheus Cunha responded almost immediately. Both sides had chances to win it, but neither found a decisive blow.
Fulham and Liverpool produced another late twist at Craven Cottage. Cody Gakpo’s stoppage-time goal appeared to have sealed a vital away win for the Reds, only for Harrison Reed to unleash a stunning long-range equalizer in the 96th minute.
Elsewhere, Newcastle United made a solid start to January with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at St. James’ Park. Goals from Malick Thiaw and a late second ensured three points for Eddie Howe’s side as Palace’s winless run continued.
A day of drama that reshaped momentum across the league.
