Australia surged to a commanding 2-0 lead in the Ashes after sealing an emphatic eight-wicket victory over England in the second Test at the Gabba on Sunday.
Michael Neser was the architect of England’s downfall, claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket and snuffing out Ben Stokes’ last stand on day four.
Resuming deep in trouble, England’s hopes rested heavily on Stokes, who showed trademark grit in a stubborn knock of 50 from 152 deliveries. He found brief support from Will Jacks, but Neser’s relentless accuracy eventually broke the resistance.
Once Stokes fell to a sharp catch by Alex Carey, England’s innings quickly folded for 241, leaving Australia a modest target of 65.
The chase was a formality. Despite Jofra Archer generating sharp pace and extracting some late movement, the hosts remained composed.
Steve Smith fittingly struck the winning runs with a lofted boundary, underlining Australia’s authority in the contest.
Earlier, Australia’s commanding first-innings total of 511 had put them firmly in control, bolstered by Mitchell Starc’s explosive 77 from No. 9 and his eight wickets across the match. England’s repeated lapses with both bat and in the field proved costly once again.
With a 2-0 advantage now secured, Australia holds a firm grip on the series, while England is left searching for answers as the Ashes slip steadily out of reach.
