Ruben Amorim has hinted that Manchester United may tweak their tactical setup in the coming weeks as the club prepares to cope with key absences due to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite previously insisting that he would not move away from his preferred back-three system, the Portuguese coach has now left the door open to change.
United will be without Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui for up to a month, forcing Amorim to rethink his options.
Speaking ahead of the Premier League clash against Aston Villa, he admitted flexibility would be necessary. “It depends on the week and the opponent,” Amorim said. “If we have to play with a back four, then we will do that.”
The situation is further complicated by Casemiro’s suspension following his fifth yellow card of the season, potentially opening the door for Kobbie Mainoo to feature more prominently.
The 20-year-old midfielder has struggled for consistent minutes, with recent off-field noise adding to the spotlight around his role.
Amorim, however, played down the distractions and stressed patience. He pointed to past United greats who also spent time on the bench early in their careers, underlining that competition is part of development at a top club.
With crucial fixtures ahead and several regulars unavailable, United’s ability to adapt tactically could prove decisive in maintaining momentum during a demanding stretch of the season.
