Caribbean Thriller Ends in West Indies’ Favour as Sri Lanka Fall Short in T20I Series

3 Min Read

The three-match T20I series between Sri Lanka and West Indies delivered everything cricket fans could ask for, dramatic momentum swings, standout individual performances, and a nail-biting finish.

In the end, West Indies emerged 2-1 winners, but the margin between the two sides was far narrower than the scoreline suggests.

The series began with West Indies claiming a seven-wicket victory in Kingston. After restricting Sri Lanka to 147 for 9, thanks largely to Jason Holder’s superb 3 for 18 and Shamar Joseph’s three wickets, the hosts chased down the target through a composed unbeaten 65 from captain Shai Hope.

Although Sri Lanka’s bowlers fought back in the middle overs, Hope’s calm presence ensured West Indies crossed the line with four balls remaining.

Sri Lanka responded strongly in the second match. Reduced to 88 for 4, they were rescued by an explosive century partnership between Kamil Mishara and Dasun Shanaka. Shanaka’s blistering 58 from just 24 deliveries transformed the innings, while Mishara anchored the effort with an unbeaten 61.

Chasing 195, West Indies appeared comfortable at 89 for 2 before Sri Lanka’s spin trio seized control. Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana triggered a collapse as the hosts lost six wickets for 32 runs, handing Sri Lanka a convincing 37-run victory and levelling the series.

The decider proved to be the most dramatic contest of all. Sri Lanka posted a competitive 169, built around Dunith Wellalage’s enterprising 43 and valuable middle-order contributions. West Indies’ chase seemed to be fading as Sri Lanka’s spinners tightened their grip, but Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten 54 kept hope alive.

Then came the decisive twist. With 60 required from the final four overs, Jason Holder launched a breathtaking late assault, smashing 21 runs from just five deliveries. His finishing touch completed a remarkable comeback and sealed a five-wicket victory with two balls to spare.

Holder’s all-round brilliance, Joseph’s pace, and West Indies’ trademark power-hitting ultimately proved decisive. Sri Lanka showed resilience and flashes of excellence, but the hosts held their nerve when it mattered most, securing a memorable series triumph in Kingston.
