João Fonseca’s remarkable Roland Garros campaign gathered even more momentum on Sunday as the 19-year-old Brazilian defeated two-time finalist Casper Ruud to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final.
Just days after stunning Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller, Fonseca produced another mature display to overcome the experienced Norwegian 7-5, 7-6(8), 5-7, 6-2 on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Facing one of the tournament’s most accomplished clay-court players, Fonseca showed composure beyond his years. The Brazilian matched Ruud shot for shot from the baseline and repeatedly delivered under pressure.
The turning point came in a tense second-set tie-break where Fonseca saved three set points before grabbing a commanding two-set lead.
Ruud, who had fought back from two sets down against Tommy Paul in the previous round, briefly threatened another comeback by claiming the third set. But Fonseca quickly regained control, racing through the fourth to seal one of the biggest victories of his young career.
The win places Fonseca among a select group of Brazilian men to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final and further strengthens his reputation as one of tennis’ brightest emerging talents.
With Brazilian legend Gustavo Kuerten watching from the stands, the moment carried added significance.
Awaiting Fonseca in the last eight is another rising star, Czech youngster Jakub Mensik. The 20-year-old booked his quarter-final berth after defeating Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 in a gripping five-set battle.
Mensik appeared in complete control after taking the opening two sets, but Rublev fought back fiercely to force a decider. Showing impressive resilience, the Czech regained his focus in the fifth set to secure the biggest Roland Garros result of his career.
Now, two of the most exciting young players in the sport will clash for a place in the semi-finals, guaranteeing that the tournament’s new generation remains firmly at the centre of the Paris spotlight.
