Jess Park Stunner Sends Manchester United into Historic Champions League Quarter-finals

Manchester United booked their place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals for the first time with a commanding 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid, sealing a dominant 5-0 aggregate victory at Leigh Sports Village.

Holding a comfortable advantage from the first leg, United were composed from the outset but survived an early scare when Atletico defender Lauren headed over from close range.

That miss proved costly. In the 28th minute, Julia Zigiotti Olme punished the visitors’ wastefulness by firing home to extend United’s control of the tie.

The decisive moment arrived just before half-time. Jess Park produced a moment of brilliance, unleashing a dipping long-range strike that flew beyond the Atletico goalkeeper and effectively ended any hopes of a comeback.

It was a goal worthy of the occasion and one that underlined United’s growing confidence on the European stage.

Despite missing several senior players through injury and illness, United managed the second half with maturity.

Atletico’s frustration boiled over late on when Xenia Perez was sent off after two quick bookings, further tilting the contest in the hosts’ favour. Marc Skinner was even able to hand a debut to 17-year-old Jess Anderson as United comfortably saw out the match.

Speaking afterwards, head coach Marc Skinner praised his side’s resilience and ruthlessness, highlighting the “special spirit” within the squad.

United will now face Bayern Munich in a mouth-watering quarter-final clash next month, joining Arsenal and Chelsea in flying the flag for the WSL in Europe’s last eight.
