Real Madrid have been dealt an early setback in the new year after Kylian Mbappé was ruled out for at least three weeks with a knee injury, effectively ending his involvement in the upcoming Spanish Super Cup.
According to L’Équipe, the French forward has been struggling with knee discomfort for several weeks, and an MRI scan conducted on Wednesday confirmed the issue.
While the injury does not require surgery, it is serious enough to sideline him through a crucial stretch of the season.
Mbappé’s absence means he will miss the Spanish Super Cup, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to 11, as well as Real Madrid’s immediate La Liga fixtures following the winter break.
Xabi Alonso will now have to rethink his attacking setup, with key matches looming both domestically and in Europe.
The 27-year-old has been one of Madrid’s standout performers this season, registering 29 goals and four assists despite managing fitness concerns. His form has been central to Los Blancos keeping pace with Barcelona at the top of the table.
Real Madrid are expected to monitor Mbappé’s recovery carefully, with a tentative return penciled in for late January. The club’s priority remains avoiding any aggravation that could extend his time on the sidelines.
