The lights stayed on at Court Philippe-Chatrier long after midnight as French tennis celebrated one of its most beloved stars.

Gael Monfils, playing his final Roland Garros match, bowed out in heartbreaking fashion after a dramatic five-set defeat to fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston.

The 39-year-old looked set for an early exit after dropping the opening two sets, but in classic Monfils style, he ignited the Paris crowd with a fearless comeback.

Flying across the baseline, chasing impossible balls and feeding off the noise from the stands, Monfils forced a deciding set before Gaston eventually closed out a 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-0 victory. But the result quickly became secondary.

As fans refused to leave the stadium, Roland Garros transformed into a farewell celebration for one of France’s greatest entertainers.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, and Gilles Simon joined Monfils on court, reuniting the famous French quartet that shaped an entire era of men’s tennis.

Tribute videos from Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz added to the emotion of the evening.

Monfils, a former world No. 6 and 13-time ATP title winner, fought back tears as he thanked the Paris crowd for standing by him throughout his career.

His wife, Elina Svitolina, was visibly emotional during the ceremony as Monfils paid tribute to his family and supporters.

Though his Roland Garros journey has ended, Monfils is not done yet. He plans to continue his farewell tour through Wimbledon, the US Open, and eventually the Paris Masters later this season.
