Pakistan Reverses Boycott, Set to Face India in T20 World Cup Clash

Pakistan will take the field against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after the country’s government formally withdrew its decision to boycott the high-profile fixture, clearing the way for the much-anticipated encounter in Colombo on February 15.

The reversal follows days of intense diplomatic and cricketing negotiations involving the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the International Cricket Council (ICC), and regional stakeholders.

In a statement issued on Monday, Pakistan’s government directed the national team to honour its scheduled match, signaling a shift from its earlier stance that cited geopolitical tensions.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier in the day and briefed him on discussions held with ICC officials and representatives from other cricket boards.

Sri Lanka, which is co-hosting the tournament alongside India, played a key role in mediating talks, concerned about the financial and logistical impact of losing one of the World Cup’s biggest draws.

Pakistan are playing all their matches in Sri Lanka, and the cancellation of the India game was expected to significantly affect revenues and fan engagement.

The ICC welcomed the decision, stressing the importance of member nations fulfilling commitments to ensure the smooth running of global events.

The boycott threat emerged after Bangladesh was removed from the tournament for refusing to travel to India, prompting Pakistan to show solidarity.

With the issue now resolved, the focus shifts back to cricket, as one of the sport’s fiercest rivalries returns to the world stage.

The India-Pakistan clash is expected to draw massive global attention and restore momentum to a World Cup that has already been shaped by controversy off the field.
