Manchester United have confirmed the departure of Jadon Sancho, bringing an underwhelming five-year association to an end.
The winger will leave Old Trafford as a free agent when his contract expires this month, closing the chapter on a move that once promised so much but ultimately failed to deliver.
Signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for a reported €85 million, Sancho arrived with high expectations after establishing himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
However, consistency proved elusive. Across 83 appearances for United, he managed 12 goals and six assists before gradually falling out of favour.
His relationship with then-manager Erik ten Hag deteriorated during the 2023-24 season, leading to a temporary return to Dortmund. There, Sancho rediscovered glimpses of his best form and played a key role in the club’s run to the 2024 Champions League final.
Subsequent loan spells failed to revive his career fully. At Chelsea during the 2024-25 campaign, he scored three league goals and helped the club win the Conference League.
Last season, he joined Aston Villa on loan, lifting the Europa League trophy but finding the net only once in all competitions.
United also confirmed the exits of Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro as part of a wider squad overhaul. Casemiro had already announced earlier this year that he would leave at the end of the season.
For Sancho, attention now turns to the next stage of his career. Reports suggest Dortmund are interested in bringing the 26-year-old back to Germany, where he enjoyed the most successful spell of his professional journey.
As United continue their rebuild, Sancho departs as one of the club’s most notable “what might have been” stories of recent years.
